Olson Leads Ute Defense From Behind the Plate:
The unquestioned leader of the Utes will be senior Brooke Olson, who returns for her second full season as the full-time starter behind the plate for the Utes. She has started 90 games during her Utah career and led the team last season with 60 hits and finished second on the squad with a .341 batting average. The Bluffdale, Utah native tied for second in the MWC with 13 runners caught stealing and was sixth in the league with 269 putouts in 2010.
Freshman Chalese Fankhauser will serve as the backup catcher during her first season in the program.
"She has great strength and speed and just needs time to develop," Hogue said. "She is my most exciting freshman because every week since she's been here, she's improved more than anyone. She is the most athletic player on the team and her `pop time' to second base is the best I've ever had in a catcher. She's learning from the best [Olson] and it will be fun to see her develop and potentially battle with Alyssa Garcia next year for the spot behind the plate."
Garcia, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, will redshirt this season after having knee surgery.
