SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team will look to rebound this weekend against Arkansas after a pair of tough losses against Cal during their opening weekend. Game one begins Friday, Feb. 25, at 3:00 p.m. CT.
Senior lefty Rick Anton will start Friday's game for Utah. Arkansas' rotation was unavailable at press time.
After two days of rainouts, Utah finally got underway against California, falling in a Sunday doubleheader, 7-0 and 6-5. In game one, Utah's Rick Anton and Cal's Erik Johnson spent most of the game in a pitchers duel before the Golden Bears broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth before breaking the game open with a six-run eighth. The Utes left nine on base during the game.
In game two, Cal rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Utes, scoring four runs on five hits in the inning. Utah starter Zach Adams had a solid outing, striking out nine in his five innings. Michael Beltran had a two-RBI double at the plate.
C.J. Cron had three hits to lead Utah for the weekend, including a home run in game two.
Despite the losses, Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg felt there were several positives to come out of the Cal series and he looks for the team to continue to make strides.
"We have to get into our routine, and this weekend didn't help with the rain," Kinneberg said. "We never took any batting practice outside. We are also still trying to figure out everyone's roles, particularly on the pitching staff. We want to put guys in a position to be effective and that suits their strengths. The outfield is still undefined, and we will keep mixing and matching until we feel we've got the right nine guys out there."
Arkansas opened its season with a sweep of Delaware State, winning 5-0, 9-2 and 10-0. The Razorbacks are coming off a 43-21 season, reaching the Super Regional round.
"We are going in to play against one of the best baseball programs in the country year in and year out," Kinneberg said. "They are a power in the SEC and have played in the World Series many times. This will be a really good experience for our guys and hopefully we play well and learn some things."
