COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah softball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2011 Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll, which was released by the conference office on Thursday. The Utes tallied 11 points in a vote among the conference's coaches.
Utah finished last season 26-29 overall and earned fifth place in the final standings for the second consecutive season with a 4-11 mark in league play.
With the infusion of nine newcomers as well as the departure of a former all-MWC pitcher and center fielder, the Utes look to move up to the upper echelon of the league.
"We have talent throughout our lineup," fourth-year head coach Amy Hogue said. "We have more athleticism, too. We have nine new kids, which is a huge number and a big makeover of our team. This fall was the best fall we've had since I've been here so I'm excited to see what we can do this spring."
BYU received 24 points to assume the top spot in the poll. San Diego State followed in second place with 22 points, while UNLV tallied 15 points to place third. Colorado State had 13 points in fourth place, while New Mexico was sixth with five points.
Utah opens its 2011 season Feb. 10 in Phoenix against Ole Miss in the Kajikawa Classic. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. MT.
