As the baseball team prepares to start the 2011 season, UtahUtes.com spotlights a different student-athlete every few days in '10 Questions With.'. This week's spotlight is senior catcher Cody Guymon, who returns to the team following an LDS mission. Guymon led the MWC in 2008 with a .383 batting average.
What is your favorite baseball memory?
Beating Stephen Strasburg as a Ute in the conference tournament in 2008.
What is your favorite sport besides baseball?
Beach volleyball and Shorehaven Circle Wiffle Ball.
What do you like to do when you are not playing baseball?
Watch baseball, dream about baseball, read, play guitar.
Do you have a nickname? How did you get your nickname?
Hammer. The team gave it to me.
Why did you choose Utah? What is the best thing about Utah?
I wanted to play and compete at a high level, get an education and serve a mission. Utah allowed me to do all three.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
My parents. I cannot single them out because they are one. They taught me values, believed in me and provided an environment for me to succeed. They loved me always.
What do you like best about Coach Kinneberg?
He is an honest, genuine man who knows the game of baseball, but teaches us how to be men. His integrity and approachability are unmatched.
What are your goals for this year?
I want to lead the team to a conference championship and get our first appearance in Omaha. Personally, I will work hard and leave it all on the field every day.
What are your pregame superstitions?
I drink a Mountain Dew, listen to Van Halen, visualize us winning and me crushing the ball, and pray.
What is your major and what do you want to do after you graduate?
Business-Finance. I plan on playing professional baseball and then getting my MBA and becoming a hospital administrator once that degree is completed too.
