2011 Maryland Round Robin Game Notes ![]()
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team has four games slated this week at the Maryland Round Robin in College Park, Md. The Utes begin the event Friday at 4:45 p.m. ET against Villanova. Their doubleheader on Saturday will begin against Hampton at 9 a.m. ET and end against host Maryland at 11:15 a.m. ET. Utah stands 10-13 this season and has won four of its last five games, most recently sweeping a doubleheader from Southern Utah in St. George on March 9.
Southern Utah Review: Utah defeated Southern Utah twice, 5-3 and 10-1, last Wednesday at Karl Brooks Field on the campus of Dixie State College. Utah outscored Southern Utah, 15-4, on the day and held a 23-10 advantage in hits.
Olson Produces: In the first game of Utah's doubleheader against Southern Utah last Wednesday, senior catcher Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Olson went 6-for-8 in the two games against the Thunderbirds to go with four RBI.
Holm Breaks Through: Utah junior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) hit her first two home runs of the season in the second game of the Utes' doubleheader against Southern Utah. Holm hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning to put Utah up 5-1. She then cracked a two-run homer with two down during Utah's five-run seventh.
Pitching Notebook: Ute starting pitchers turned in a pair of complete games Wednesday against Southern Utah as Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) took the victory in game one and Naomi Amu (Oceanside, Calif.) picked up the win in the second game against the Thunderbirds. Utah's pitching limited Southern Utah to a .189 batting average over the afternoon, while the Utes hit at a .365 clip.
Nielson threw her fifth complete game of the season in the first game, allowing two earned runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts and only one walk. She improved to 8-9 this season with the victory. Nielson leads the Mountain West Conference with 106 strikeouts this season. She is averaging 8.43 strikeouts per seven innings pitched this season.
Amu claimed her second victory of the season after going 7.0 innings and allowing only one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and did not yield a walk.
