SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team continues at Spring Mobile Ballpark with a three-game series this weekend against Air Force, beginning on Friday, March 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Utah lefty Rick Anton earns the start on Friday against Air Force's Evan Abrecht.
Saturday the Utes are hosting Armed Service Appreciation Day. Anyone with a military ID will receive free admission. COL Michael Eliason of the Utah Air Force ROTC will be throwing out the first pitch and the Utah Army ROTC will be presenting the colors for the National Anthem, led by MSG Kurtis Crawford.
Utah has been up and down in its last few games, taking two of three from BYU last weekend and splitting a mid-week series against Southern Utah. The Utes have struggled with allowing big innings and leaving runners on base.
"We are generating a lot of opportunities to score, but we are not scoring as many runs as I would like," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Defensively, we need to prevent other teams from big innings."
The Utes did receive a blow this week to their starting rotation, as Zach Adams is out with a shoulder injury. Their third starter is undecided at this time.
The first national rankings of the season came out this week, and Utes are featured in several categories. C.J. Cron entered the week first in the NCAA in batting average (currently hitting .493) and ranks in the top 10 in slugging percentage (2nd), on-base percentage (6th) and RBI per game (7th). Michael Beltran, who has eight sacrifice bunts this year, leads the nation in sacrifice bunts per game (0.53).
The Falcons are 11-12 on the season and are coming off a pair of losses to No. 24 Wichita State. This is Air Force's first Mountain West Conference series.
"Air Force is a different club than they have ever been," Kinneberg said. "Their new coach [Maj. Mike Kazlausky] is a former cadet and player, and I imagine that he has them playing like he played - hard-nosed, determined baseball."
