SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-9) dropped a 5-2 decision to Loyola Marymount Saturday.

In doubles play, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Garrett LaBarre were defeated by Alex Wilton and Sebastian Bustamante, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot. The freshmen duo of Matt Cowley and Devin Lane then earned a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 position, topping Tyler Gottshall and Aris Andreasian, setting up junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla to clinch the doubles point. The pair topped Daniel Simko and Nicholas Bjerke 9-8(0) at the top spot, putting the Utes up, 1-0.

Cowley was the first to Ute to finish in singles, falling to Simko, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 5 singles position, evening the score a 1-1. Medinilla was then defeated by Wilton, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot, followed by freshman Ben Tasevac's hard fought 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Tom Price at the sixth position.

The Lions saw their match clinching point at 4-1 when Lane suffered a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 defeat by Bustamante at the No. 3 slot.

After dropping the first set, 1-6, Mamedov rallied back and topped Bjerke, 6-3, 6-3, earning Utah's second point at the No. 2 spot. Suriano then fell to Andreasian, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3 at the top position, making the final score 5-2 in favor of Loyola Marymount.

The Utes return to action Sunday, April 3, when they host their first conference opponent, TCU, at the Eccles Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
