COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Three Runnin' Utes earned All-Mountain West Conference recognition Monday, highlighted by junior wing Will Clyburn, who was a second-team selection. Joining him are junior center David Foster, who was named to the MWC All-Defensive Team and junior guard Josh "Jiggy" Watkins, who received an Honorable Mention nod.
"I'm very proud of Will and Josh for their immediate adjustment from newcomers to elite players in this league," said Utah head coach Jim Boylen. "And once again, David dominated the paint with his toughness, competitiveness and shot blocking while fighting through an injury-plagued year. With these three honorees and the rest of our returning players, I'm confident that the future is bright for Utah basketball."
The All-MWC awards are based on conference games only. Clyburn led the Utes in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg), ranking No. 4 and No. 7 in the conference, respectively. He scored double figures in 11 of his 15 MWC games, hitting the 20-plus point mark three times. Clyburn also posted four double-doubles against MWC opposition.
Foster earns his second consecutive All-Defensive Team honor, leading the MWC in blocked shots (3.4 bpg) for the second straight year. During the MWC season, Foster became Utah's all-time leading shot-blocker and has increased his career total to 215. The previous record was set by Luke Nevill , with 205 swats from 2005-09. After shattering Utah's single-season blocks record last year (115) his 95 blocks this year are now the second-best single-season mark as well.
Watkins finished second on the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and led the squad in assists (3.6 apg), ranking No. 6 and and No. 8 in the MWC, respectively. He scored double digits in 12 of 16 league games and recently posted a career-high nine assists on the road at Colorado State. Watkins also scored his career-high of 24 points during MWC play this year, hitting the mark against No. 6-ranked San Diego State. Following Clyburn's injury, he stepped forward and was Utah's leading scorer in three straight games to finish the season.
Utah (13-17), the No. 7 seed, takes on No. 2 seed San Diego State (29-2) in the quarterfinals of the MWC Tournament in Las Vegas on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT.
