LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-12, 0-3 MWC) dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 52-ranked UNLV Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Freshmen Devin Lane and Matt Cowley netted Utah's two points from the Nos. 3 and 5 singles positions.

After dropping the doubles point, junior Benito Suriano fell to No. 58-ranked Mehdi Bouras, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot, putting the Rebels up 2-0. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov was then defeated by Tamas Batyi, 6-3, 6-4, at the second slot.

UNLV clinched the match a 4-0 when freshman Alejandro Medinilla's 6-4, 6-3 fell to Rene Ruegamer at the No. 4 position. The Rebels extended their win to 5-0 when freshman Garrett LaBarre dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Charlie Alvarado at the No. 6 spot.

Utah answered with two consecutive wins to make the final score 5-2 in favor of UNLV. Lane battled Johannes Markel for a 7-5, 6-7(5), 1-0(7), victory at the No. 3 position, followed by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win from Cowley over Alex Bull at the fifth slot.

In doubles play, Mamedov teamed up with Lane at the No. 3 spot, falling to Kasper Konyves and Bull, 9-7. The Rebels clinched the doubles point when Medinilla and Suriano were defeated by Bouras and Markel, 9-7, at the top position. Cowley and LaBarre suffered a hard-fought 8-7(7) loss to Ruegamer and Bernard Schoeman at the No. 2 slot.

The Utes return to action when they host Air Force and No. 53 New Mexico at the Eccles Tennis Center, April 15 and 16 at 1 p.m. MT.
