Utah senior pitcher Stephen Streich will be sharing his thoughts throughout the season on UtahUtes.com in `The Streich Zone.'
Few meals in my life have been worth remembering. I've always been a guy who eats because he has to. I need X amount of calories so I don't lose weight. Some may see this and say I am lucky, but over the years eating has become a chore. But let me tell you about a meal that changed my life. A meal so good, it was worth remembering.
It was three years ago and the team was playing in New Mexico. A pretty typical day on the road: check into the hotel and try to find something to do to pass the time until tomorrow's game. This Thursday however, turned into a day far from typical.
A former Ute teammate and dear friend Kerr Foster, who was my roommate at the time, asked me if I wanted to go grab some BBQ. He could tell I wasn't too enthused. I asked him the usual questions: how far is it, how much does it cost, and if it was any good. His response didn't help get me excited. He said it wasn't as good as some of the BBQ he was used to growing up in Texas, but that it was close and worth a try. So we started walking.
The coming events are all blurred into what still to this day has to be the best meal I've ever had. All I can tell you for sure about the next 60 minutes was that the place was called Rudy's, and that my taste buds had never been to a place so special.
I mean, this place was good. If I had to choose between a winning lottery ticket and one more slice of Rudy's turkey smothered in Rudy's sauce ... I'm picking my friend the turkey.
We head to New Mexico this weekend, and I'll give you one guess as to where I'm going first. I recommend you do the same. Do a Google maps search for Rudys, print off directions, and walk, run, drive or even fly to the nearest location immediately. It will be worth remembering.
