SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman forward J.J. O'Brien has requested and been granted his release from the University of Utah men's basketball team.
"I have asked for my release to explore my options, but I in no way want people to think I am definitely leaving Utah," O'Brien said. "After talking with Coach K, I am confident this could still be the best place for me and I would love to remain a Runnin' Ute. But in order to assure that this is right for me, I need at least look at other options and make an informed decision."
"It's a situation where we believe a student-athlete should make the decision that is in their best interest," said Krystkowiak. "We support J.J.'s decision to explore what's out there but are very optimistic that he will see Utah is the best option for him. He is a very good basketball player and a great person, and as a sophomore he could be an integral piece in the restoration and future of our program."
