IRVINE, Calif. - For the second-straight season, Utah baseball player C.J. Cron has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2011 Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to the top player in collegiate baseball. The award is selected by the membership of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the College Baseball Foundation.
Entering the week, Cron ranks second nationally in slugging percentage, fifth in batting average, fifth in doubles, second in doubles per game, ninth in home runs per game, fifth in total bases and 12th in on-base percentage. He leads the Mountain West Conference in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, RBI and home runs.
Through Friday's game against UAB, Cron is hitting .446 with 24 doubles, 58 RBI and a .832 slugging percentage. He hit his 15th home run of the season in Friday's game.
Cron is the only player from the MWC selected as a semifinalist.
The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy Award recipient based on two rounds of national voting. The award will be presented on Tuesday, June 21 at 10 a.m. CT, prior to the fourth day of the 2011 CWS.
