SAN DIEGO - The Utah baseball team enters the Mountain West Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed, its highest seed since 2002, when the Utes also finished second in the MWC. As the two seed the Utes receive a first-round bye and do not play until Wednesday, May 25 at 3:00 p.m. PT. Utah will face the highest remaining seed from the opening round games.
"We are anxious to get going," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We have to gear it up this week and make a charge. We will see what we can do to get in a regional."
The Utes will throw left handed pitcher Rick Anton in its first game.
Utah is 16-21 overall in the tournament since the inception of the MWC in 2000. The Utes are the only team to have won the tournament since TCU entered the league in 2006, taking the 2009 title.
The Utes are led by C.J. Cron, who was named as the first two-time MWC Baseball Player of the Year on Monday. Five Utes earned first-team honors, tying TCU for the most first-team selections, and had a school-record seven overall selections. Cron (first base), pitchers Rick Anton and Tyler Wagner, second baseman Michael Beltran and outfielder Shaun Cooper were all first-team picks while James Brooks (shortstop) and Trey Nielsen (third base) both made the second team.
