Nielsen's Seven RBI Lifts Utes to 7-3 Win at MWC Baseball Tournament
Game Highlights and Interviews (The Mtn.)
The Utah baseball team continues in the winners bracket at the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday, facing New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. PT (8:00 p.m. MT). The game will be televised on The Mtn., with a simulcast on CBSSN.
The Utes swept New Mexico during the regular season. Utah won game one, 7-1, while New Mexico rallied from a 10-0 deficit in game two to cut the lead to one run, 12-11, before the Utes pulled back ahead in the final innings to win 15-11. Game three saw Utah take a lead with a five-run second inning, going on to win 9-3. C.J. Cron hit .444 against the Lobos (8-for-18), and was named MWC Player of the Week after the series.
Utah (which received a first-round bye) defeated San Diego State, 7-3, in its opening game. Trey Nielsen drove in all seven of Utah's runs, coming to the plate twice with the bases loaded. He hit a bases-clearing double in the first inning, while driving a pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam in the seventh inning. Rick Anton picked up his ninth win of the year on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits through eight innings. He struck out seven.
Six seed New Mexico upset top-seeded TCU in the late game on Wednesday, 4-3. The Lobos scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead over the No. 7 ranked Horned Frogs. TCU loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth but UNM got out of the inning with a short fly ball and a double play. TCU made four errors in the game.
Two games are on tap today in the consolation bracket before Utah/New Mexico tonight. BYU (which eliminated UNLV yesterday in a 5-1 score) takes on San Diego State at 11 a.m. PT. The winner faces TCU at 3:00 p.m. PT.
