SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team has signed a pair of junior college transfers, the team announced Tuesday. Javon Dawson, a power forward from Gulf Coast Community College and Dijon Farr, a forward from Indian Hills Community College, have committed to play for the Runnin' Utes in 2011-12.
Dawson is a 6-foot-7, 260-pound power forward, who will enter Utah as a redshirt sophomore after sitting out 2010-11 with a knee injury. He will have three years of eligibility left to play. As a freshman in 2009-10, Dawson appeared in all 29 games, making 21 starts. He averaged 8.1 points per game, fourth best on the team, and led the squad in rebounding at 7.3 boards per game. Dawson connected on 94-of-214 shots from the floor, good for 43.9 percent, and was named to the conference all-freshman team.
"We think Javon's maturity level makes him a good fit for a program in transition," said head coach Larry Krystkowiak. "He is a physical post-player who we feel can handle the bigger and stronger players we expect to see in the Pac-12 next year. The Panhandle Conference is an athletic and physical league, and Javon was a freshman all-conference player there. We believe that his experience, toughness and skill set will carry over well to the Pac-12."
A native of Cordele, Ga., Dawson graduated from Crisp County High School in 2009, and was originally recruited by a number of Division I programs before electing to go the junior college route. He was also highly recruited in football, playing quarterback and wide receiver.
Farr is a 6-foot-6, 213-pound forward, who will come to Utah as a junior with two years of eligibility remaining. A first-team all-Region 11 selection as a sophomore this year, Farr started 31 of 33 games on a team that went 23-10 and tied for its conference's regular-season title. He was the team's third-leading scorer at 9.6 points per game and second on the squad in rebounding at 5.4 boards per contest, while also leading the team in steals (50) and blocked shots (29).
"Dijon can play multiple positions and brings great athleticism to the perimeter, both as a scorer and a defender," said Krystkowiak. "We also love the fact that he played for Jeff Kidder at Indian Hills, one of the best, and toughest, junior college coaches in the country."
Additionally, Farr was a second-team all-conference selection as a freshman. He averaged a team-leading 11.9 points and was second on the squad in rebounds (4.2 rpg) and 3-pointers made (44), while scoring double figures in 24 of 33 games. He started all 33 games on a 25-8 team which won its conference championship outright.
Hailing from Pacolet, S.C., Farr graduated from Broome High School in 2009. He was also a highly-regarded football recruit at wide receiver. He made nine interceptions as a high school junior.
The Runnin' Utes expect to announce additional signees as the spring signing period continues.
