SALT LAKE CITY - First baseman C.J. Cron became the first player in Utah baseball history selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft when he was chosen as the 17th overall pick by the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. He will forego his senior season to play professionally.
Previously, Utah's highest draft pick was Stephen Fife, who was a third-round selection in 2008.
"Unbelievable. I'm really excited for him," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The Angels are a great organization, and I couldn't be happier for him."
Cron is a two-time first-team All-American and a two-time MWC Player of the Year. He set a Utah career record with a .396 batting average. This past season he was a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy, while leading the nation in slugging percentage (.803) and OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage, 1.320). He is also ranked second nationally in doubles per game (0.53), third in batting average (.434), sixth in doubles (26), sixth in total bases (159), ninth in on-base percentage (.517).
Last year he led the NCAA in RBI per game (1.65) while ranking fifth nationally in slugging percentage (.817) and eighth in home runs per game (0.41). He was a Freshman All-American in 2009, and he was the only player in the country that year to get three hits in a game off No. 1 MLB draft pick Stephen Strasburg.
The 2011 MLB Draft continues on Tuesday, June 7, with rounds 2-30, and finishes on Wednesday with rounds 31-50. Stay tuned to UtahUtes.com throughout the draft for further selections.
