SALT LAKE CITY - Utah left-handed pitcher Rick Anton became the second Ute drafted in the 2011 MLB Draft on Tuesday when he was selected in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
C.J. Cron was the first Utah player taken in the first round on Monday, going to the Angels as the 17th overall pick.
"I was really excited, hearing my name," Anton said. "They said that they'd been watching me for a few years. They told me I'd most likely be going to Odgen, and it would be nice if I could. It's going to be fun."
Anton was a first-team all-MWC pick this year after going 9-1 with a 2.52 ERA. He tied for the MWC lead in wins while ranking fourth in ERA, and his 85 strikeouts ranked third in the conference. Anton also tied for second in the MWC with seven pickoffs.
"This is a great honor for Rick," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "He came here as an undrafted player and really worked hard to get to this point."
Anton finishes his Utah career with a 16-4 record, 149 strikeouts and a 3.74 ERA.
The 2011 MLB Draft concludes on Wednesday, June 8, with rounds 31-50. Stay tuned to UtahUtes.com throughout the draft for further selections.
