This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (0-0-1) heads south to Provo, Utah, Tuesday for a 7 p.m. MT matchup at BYU (0-0-1). The Utes then host Nevada (0-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ute Field in their home opener.
The Deseret Duel Rivalry Series...
Tuesday night's matchup between Utah and BYU will mark the first contest of the 2011-12 Deseret First Duel rivalry series.
The rivalry series includes each sport where Utah and BYU compete head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel uses a system that awards points to the winner of each competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner in each sport. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. A granite traveling trophy is awarded to the overall series champion each year.
Underclassmen Impact...
Head coach Rich Manning and his staff showed confidence in their youthful squad Friday at Cal State Fullerton as seven of the 11 starters were freshmen and sophomores, while four more underclassmen came on as substitutes. Among the five freshmen who saw action, defender Avery Ford and forward Katie Taylor cracked the starting lineup. Ashton Hall, Jill Robison and Sarah Duncan all appeared as substitutes, with Robision leading the Utes with a pair of shots, including a double-overtime strike that rung the goalpost, missing by mere inches.
Utes' Goalkeeping Goes Two-Deep...
Utah used a pair of goalkeepers against Fullerton, demonstrating trust in both, and saw great dividends from it. Incumbent senior Hannah Turpen, a three-year starter and a staple of the Ute defense, gave way to sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock at halftime. Mulcock, who made three appearances as a freshman, including two starts for an injured Turpen last year, was up to the task as she made four crucial saves, including a pair of stops on breakaway attempts.
Turpen and Mulcock are backed up by freshmen Cassity Cutrer and Molly Poletto, two budding freshmen who are training hard and preparing for their opportunity to shine as well.
Twin Towers Lead Ute Defense Once Again...
Senior center-backs Lauren Dudley and Lauren Porter return to anchor the Ute defense for the fourth straight year. Standing at 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-9 respectively, they make up one of the tallest center-back duos in the Pac-12, if not the entire western region. Both provide a tremendous heading presence in the back and offer a scoring threat going forward, combining for eight goals over the last three years.
Scouting this Week's Opposition...
BYU Cougars
Utah's traditional rival, BYU, enters Tuesday night's game following a 2-2 draw at #20 Washington in its season-opener.
Carlee Payne and Dana Oldroyd were the goal scorers for the Cougars. Payne came into this season as the top returning point-getter for BYU following a six-goal, seven-assist effort last year (19 points). With Oldroyd's goal, she has already equaled her season output from 2010.
Defensively, McKinzie Olson is back in goal for the Cougars. After allowing only 11 goals last year and posting a 0.49 goals-against average for the season, Olson surrendered a pair of goals against Washington while also making two saves.
BYU is coached by Jennifer Rockwood, now in her 17th year. Rockwood has amassed a 259-76-27 (.753) record at the helm for the Cougars.
Nevada Wolfpack
Like the Utes, Nevada enters this week looking for its first goal of the 2011 season after suffering a 3-0 shutout at Pacific in the season-opener, followed by a 4-0 neutral-site loss to Penn State.
Coming into the season, the Wolfpack's top returning scorers were Kori Disarufino and Danielle Green, who each tallied three goals last season. Through the first two games, Green has gotten off four shots, while Disarufino has taken one.
Jenna Riddle has made both starts in goal for the Wolfpack this year, allowing all seven goals while recording 13 saves. Dana Moreno also saw 11 minutes of action against Penn State.
Nevada is coached by Dr. Melissa Price, now in her second year, who owns a 7-11-3 record after a 7-9-3 inaugural campaign as the Wolfpack's head coach.
The All-Time Series...
Utah holds a 5-17-1 record against BYU, including a 3-5-1 record on the Cougars' home field. Utah's last win in the series came in 2007, a 1-0 victory in Provo. In their last meeting, BYU posted a 2-1 victory at Ute Field in 2010.
Utah won its only previous meeting with Nevada, a 6-0 victory at Ute Field in 2000.
Utah's Last Outing...
Utah opened up the 2011 season with a 0-0 draw at Cal State Fullerton (0-0-1), Aug. 19. Mulcock, who came on at halftime, was the story of the game for the Utes as she made several key saves, including a pair of stops on breakaway attempts.
Utah's best scoring chance of the contest came with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period as Robison drilled a right-footed cross from the right wing that sliced across the face of goal and pinged squarely off the goalpost, mere inches from giving the Utes a golden-goal victory in her collegiate debut.
The Utes were out-shot in the contest, 11-5, with shots on goal going 4-0 for the Titans. Corner kicks were 2-1 in Fullerton's favor, while Utah committed 13 fouls to CSF's 10. Fullerton was whistled for seven offside infractions and the Utes were called for three. (For complete recap, visit UtahUtes.com or see page 7 of notes).
Utes Looking to Ace Chemistry Early On...
Manning and his staff know that, as with any young team, the quicker they can jel, the better. In addition to the 11 freshmen playing their first collegiate soccer, the Utes have regained the services of three experienced players who redshirted last year: Allie Wisner, Monica Okapal and Stephanie Lemeza, who all played extensively as freshmen but sat out last year with various injuries. Redshirt junior Katie Martinez, a difference-maker in the midfield who returned from injury with seven games remaining last year, took a knock in the season-opener at Fullerton and her playing status is currently unknown.
Porter Named Team Captain...
Utah will be captained by the aforementioned senior center back, Porter. A four-year starter with a great academic record as well, Porter will bring leadership on and off the field for the Utes.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2. UCLA (102); 3. Oregon State (96); 4. USC (86); 5. Washington (82); 6. California (78); 7. Arizona State (60); t8. Oregon (49); t8. Washington State (49); 10. Colorado (35); 11. Utah (18); 12. Arizona (16).
