SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (1-0) opened their 2012 season Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center, netting a 7-0 sweep of the Weber State Wildcats. Freshman Ace Matias captured the match clinching point for the Utes, downing Peter Ramstromer Pello, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

"It was a good way to start our season," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We had to get through some first match jitters, but once we settled into the match, we did better. Dmytro [Mamedov] had a good win at No. 1 singles spot, beating a senior from Weber State and it is very good to have Benito back into our starting line up as well. We still have a lot of work to do, but this is definitely a great way to start our season."

Utah started off strong, earning the doubles point despite senior Benito Suriano and freshman Slim Hamza dropping an 8-1 decision to 44th-ranked Oliver Good and Simon Unger at the top spot.

Sophomores Ben Tasevac and Devin Lane topped Dave Hintze and Ryan Garner, 8-2, at the No. 3 position. Junior Dmytro Mamedov and Matias clinched the doubles point for Utah, downing Ramstromer Pello and Ciao Poitena, 8-1, at the second slot.

Going into singles with a 1-0 advantage, Lane dominated Ben Rode, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot, putting the Utes up 2-0. Tasevac then extended the lead to 3-0, downing Poitena, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.

Matias then earned the match clinching point at 4-0 with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ramstromer Pello at the fourth slot. Hamza then made the score 5-0 in favor of the Utes when he netted a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory in his collegiate debut at the No. 2 position.

Mamedov extended the Utes' win to 6-0 at the top spot, battling Unger to a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 victory. After dropping his first set, 6-7(4), Suriano rallied for a win, defeating Hintze, 6-4, 10-4 in the second and third sets at the No. 3 slot, making the final score 7-0 in favor of Utah.
