WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team was picked to finish ninth in the inaugural Pac-12 Conference Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, which was released by the conference office on Wednesday. The Utes tallied nine points in a vote among the conference's coaches.
"This team has done a great job preparing for the upcoming season," Utah head coach Amy Hogue said. "We have a very talented group and some great leadership this year. We have a bunch of players who have started every game for the past few years. They aren't going to back down from anyone."
Utah finished last season 29-22 overall and earned fourth place in its final Mountain West Conference season with a 7-5 mark in league play.
With four starting infielders returning along with a deep pitching staff, the Utes look to move an impact during their first season in the Pac-12.
Defending national champion Arizona State received 61 points, as well as six first-place votes, to assume the top spot in the poll. California followed in second place with 58 points, while Arizona tallied 48 points to place third. UCLA had 40 points in fourth place, while Stanford was fifth with 38 points. Washington (30 pts.), Oregon (26 pts.) and Oregon State (14 pts.) followed.
Utah opens its 2012 season Feb. 10 in Tempe, Ariz., against former MWC foe San Diego State in the Kajikawa Classic. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
