LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (5-1) captured its first road victory Friday at UNLV. The Utes topped the Rebels, 5-2, after netting the doubles point and three consecutive singles victories. Junior Dmytro Mamedov earned the match clinching point for the Utes, downing Tamas Batyi, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. Mamedov and sophomore Devin Lane improve to an undefeated 6-0 singles dual match record, as well.

"I'm very proud of this team for bouncing back after the BYU loss," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Even though this was our first match outdoors this season, it was our best match of the year. We started well by winning the doubles point and fought really hard to earn our first ranked win of the year."

The Utes started out strong in doubles play, clinching the point in two sets. Sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias topped Alex Bull and Rene Ruegamer, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot.

Lane and freshman Slim Hamza then earned the doubles point for the Utes at the No. 3 slot with an 8-5 victory over Willie Sublette and Batyi. Senior Benito Suriano and Mamedov then dropped an 8-4 decision to Bryan Kenyon and Bernard Schoeman at the top spot.

Going into singles with a 1-0 advantage, the Utes saw three consecutive wins to clinch the match at 4-0. Lane downed Sublette, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 position, making the score 2-0.

Hamza then followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bull at the No. 3 slot. Mamedov then clinched the match at 4-0 with a victory at the second slot.

Matias then fell, 0-6, 6-2, 6-3, to Kenyon at the No. 4 spot, giving the Rebels their first point and making the score 4-1. Suriano then dropped a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Ruegamer at the No. 1 position, making the score 4-2.

Freshman Rafael Davidian then battled Charlie Alvarado to a tight 6-7, 6-1, 10-1 victory at the sixth slot, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Utes.
