The University of Utah softball team continues its preseason tournament schedule for four games in two days at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. All games will be played at Lobo Softball Field.
The Utes will start the weekend against North Dakota on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT. Their second game of the day will be against Cal State Bakersfield at 12 p.m. MT. Utah's doubleheader on Sunday will start against the Fighting Sioux at 9 a.m. MT, then the Utes will face former Mountain West Conference foe New Mexico at 11 a.m. MT.
Utah has won seven straight games and 10 of its last 11 games and stands 11-3 overall through the first three weeks of the season. During Utah's last 11 games, the Utes have outscored their foes 72-14 and hit .320 as a team and limited their opponents to a .175 clip.

UNCG Spartan Classic Review: The Utes went 5-0 at UNCG's Spartan Classic last weekend in Greensboro, N.C., outscoring their opponents by a 38-7 margin. Utah outhit is foes .323 to .145 and was 11 of 11 on stolen base attempts, while allowing only one steal during the entire weekend. Utah earned an 8-2 win in a rain-shortened game over Drexel in the first game of the weekend. The Utes defeated Rider, 14-2 in six innings, and UNC Greensboro, 3-1, on Saturday. Utah took a pair of wins over Drexel by a 4-0 margin and beat Rider, 9-2, in the finale on Sunday.
Hammerin' Utes: The Utes have clubbed 17 home runs so far this season, compared to just seven for their opponents. Senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) struck her seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot over the center-field fence on a 1-0 pitch Sunday against Drexel, to put the Utes up 3-0. She now leads the Pac-12 with 23 RBI this season and is second with seven home runs. She is fourth on Utah's all-time list with 35 career homers.
In the same game against Drexel, freshman Desaray Akins (Tucson, Ariz.) tagged a 2-0 delivery over the right-center field wall for her first career home in the top of the sixth frame. Akins' solo shot was the third RBI of her career.
Infield Notebook: Utah junior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) hit .462 with a 1.000 slugging percentage at the UNCG Spartan Classic. She hit two home runs and a double with eight RBI. She also drew six walks, scored five times and stole four bases. Hoopiiaina went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI in the opening game of the event Friday against Drexel, an 8-2 win in a rain-shortened game at UNCG Softball Stadium.
Freshman Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) went 3-for-3 in the second game of the day against Rider with five RBI, including the first two home runs of her career. Five RBI against Rider is a new single-game high for any Utah player this season.
Pitching Notebook: Utah senior pitcher Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) posted a 0.42 ERA in 16.2 innings for the Utes at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic. She only gave up one earned run on seven hits, while striking out 37 and only walking five. She now has 96 strikeouts this season and now owns 294 over her career.
Sophomore Naomi Amu (Oceanside, Calif.) did not allow an earned run in 4.1 innings Sunday against Rider. She yielded only two hits to the Broncs, while striking out four and walking three. She is 3-1 this season with the win and has won her last three decisions.
