SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (4-0) downed Montana State and Idaho State Saturday in a double header at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes earned a 6-1 victory over the Montana State Bobcats, followed by a 7-0 sweep of the Idaho State Bengals. Junior Dmytro Mamedov earned the match clinching point against the Bobcats, while sophomore Devin Lane netted the deciding point against the Bengals.
After earning the doubles point, Utah earned four straight singles victories against Montana State. Sophomore Alejandro Medinilla topped Martin Marilles, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 6 position, while fellow sophomore Devin Lane netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Diego Campos Contreras at the No. 4 spot, making the score 3-0 in favor of Utah.
Mamedov then clinched the match at 4-0 when he downed Markus Schleuter from the second slot, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Ben Tasevac then routed Lander Jewett, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 position, to extend the Utes' victory to 5-0.
Senior Benito Suriano then dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Niklas Brandes at the top spot to give Montana State their only point. Freshman Slim Hamza made the final score 6-1 when he netted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alberto Fuentes at the No. 3 position.
In doubles play, Hamza and Lane teamed up at the second spot to down Campos Contreras and Fuentes, 8-2. Suriano and Mamedov then fell to Brandes and Schleuter, 8-2, at the No. 1 slot.
With the match split at one game apiece, Medinilla and Tasevac netted the doubles point for the Utes with an 8-5 victory at the No. 3 position.
The Utes returned to the courts against Idaho State, earning the doubles point in two games. Suriano and Medinilla downed Charles Norman and Dakota Pate, 8-3, at the No.1 position.
Lane and Hamza then teamed up at the No. 3 spot to top Krzyzstof Stempien and Andres Coello, 8-3, to earn the doubles point for the Utes. Mamedov and freshman Ace Matias then battled Nate Gross and Dan Buckingham to a tight 8-7(1) victory at the No. 2 slot.
Going into singles with a 1-0 advantage, Matias downed Gross, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot, while Mamedov extended Utah's lead to 3-0 when he netted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Norman at the top position.
Lane then earned the match clinching point for the Utes at 4-0 when he topped Buckingham, 6-0, 7-5, at the No. 4 slot. Hamza then routed Stempien at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-4, extending Utah's victory to 5-0. Medinilla then secured a 6-2, 7-5, win at the No. 6 position over Pate, while Tasevac completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the fifth slot.
