Live Stats for This Week's Games:
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - University of Utah senior right-hander Generra Nielson became the first Ute softball player to earn weekly recognition from the Pac-12 Conference as she was named the Pitcher of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Nielson threw a no-hitter in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against Colgate. The no-hitter was the second of her Utah career, and the 25th in school history. Nielson tied her career high with 16 strikeouts and did not issue a walk to a single Raider hitter. She struck out eight of the first nine hitters she faced. Nielson's other no-hitter at Utah came last season in a home game against Idaho State on Apr. 1.
During Monday's doubleheader with the Raiders, she did not give up an earned run and only yielded one hit in 9.0 innings, while fanning 18. Nielson picked up the win in both decisions Monday against Colgate and pushed her record to 14-4 this season and 35-16 during her career at Utah.
"Generra has been the driving force behind our team and a big part of our 19-5 start," Utah Head coach Amy Hogue said. "It hasn't just been this week that she has put up good numbers, she does that every week. She has been extremely consistent and puts us in a position to win nearly every game she starts."
Nielson has nine games of 10 or more strikeouts this season and she has reached that mark 14 times over her career. In game two, Nielson went 2.0 innings in her 19th start of the season and allowed only one hit to go with a pair of strikeouts.
Nielson leads the Pac-12 with 171 strikeouts this season and is 52 ahead of California's Jolene Henderson. She also leads the league with 42 hitter struck out looking. Nielson ranks among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in several other categories: second in innings pitched (111.2), tied for second in wins (14), fourth in ERA (1.07), and fifth in opponent batting average (.168). This is Nielson's third Pitcher of the Week award since joining the Utah program. She was awarded two Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors last season on Feb. 23 and Mar. 29.
The Utes will host their home opener on Wednesday, a doubleheader against Southern Utah, starting at 2 p.m. MT. Utah then travels to Seattle to begin their inaugural Pac-12 season by taking on third-ranked Washington Friday at 6 p.m. PT, Saturday at 4 p.m. PT and the finale will be on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT.
