Utah State and Idaho State Game Notes ![]()
Live Stats for This Week's Games:
The University of Utah softball team will play a pair of non-conference contests this week, hosting Utah State on Wednesday and traveling to Idaho State on Thursday. Utah hosts Utah State in its third home game of the year Wednesday at 4 p.m., at Ute Softball Field. The Utes then head north to take on Idaho State on Thursday at 4 p.m., in Pocatello, Idaho.
The Utes are 21-8 overall this season after suffering three straight losses at third-ranked Washington in their first-ever Pac-12 Conference series last weekend in Seattle. Utah is currently in its longest losing stretch of the season, a three-game skid.
Error Free: The first game at Washington was Utah's fourth consecutive game without being charged an error. The Utes went 3-1 in those contests and are 7-3 this season when not committing a miscue in the field.
Nielson Notes: In two outings during the Washington series, senior right-hander Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) is third in the NCAA and leads the Pac-12 with 191 strikeouts this season and is 55 ahead of California's Jolene Henderson. She also leads the league with 44 hitters struck out looking. Nielson ranks among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in several other categories: second in innings pitched (128.2), tied for third (and eighth in the NCAA) in wins (15), sixth in ERA (1.36), and in opponent batting average (.181).
Hitting Through Hoops: Junior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) hit .389 in Utah's five games last week with three home runs and three RBI. Hoopiiaina led the way for the Ute offense with two hits in three at-bats for her ninth multiple-hit effort of 2012 on Sunday at third-ranked Washington.
Elliott Elevates Her Game: Utah junior designated player Katelyn Elliott (Spanish Fork, Utah) hit .571 with an .857 slugging percentage in five games last week for the Utes. She went 8-for-14, including a double and home run, with five RBI and two runs scored in five starts. Elliott currently enjoys a team-high five-game hit streak as she had at least one base hit in all five games for the Utes this week.
Whitney Can Mash: Senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) is sixth in the Pac-12 with a .795 slugging percentage and 66 total bases, seventh with eight home runs, and tied for ninth place in the conference stats with 28 runs batted in. She is also among the top 10 in the league in six other categories: third in slugging percentage (.880), fourth in total bases (66), tied for sixth in home runs (8), seventh in on-base percentage (.518) and hits (35), and eighth in RBI (28).
