Live Stats for Today's Games:
The Ute softball team wraps up its three-game Pac-12 set today against No. 19/15 Oregon at Ute Field.
Action will begin with the continuation of yesterday's postponed game. The Utes trail the Ducks, 3-2, with one out in the top of the third. There will be a 1-0 count on Oregon's Christie Nieto and Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah), who just entered the game, in the circle for Utah. The third and final game of the series will begin 30 minutes after the completion of the postponed contest.
The Utes are 23-16 overall this season and looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. After dropping the series opener Friday to the Ducks, Utah owns an 0-10 record in Pac-12 play.
Postponed Game Update: Utah scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a single to right field by senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah). Freshman Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) then laced a double off the right-field fence to put runners on first and third. Sophomore Naomi Amu (Oceanside Calif.) followed by coming up with a hard-hit groundball to the Duck shortstop. The throw pulled the Oregon first baseman off the base and allowed two Ute runs to score.
Hoopin': Junior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) registered Utah's third hit in the postponed game as she singled up the middle of the Oregon defense to lead off the first inning.
Hoopiiaina had the Utes' lone extra-base hit of the day with a double in the fifth inning Friday against Oregon.
Hoopiiaina is tied with Holm for second place on the team in doubles with eight this season and has 24 over her career.
Hoopiiaina is second on the squad with 15 extra-base hits this year and she has 41 over Ute career. Hoopiiaina scored each of the first two times she reached base Wednesday at No. 13/13 Arizona.
`Hoop' is a perfect 12-for-12 in steal attempts this season and 17-of-25 over her career.
Nielson Notes: With four more strikeouts Friday against Oregon, Nielson upped her career total to 429, with 230 of those coming this season. Nielson turned in back-to-back complete games in Tucson. She now has 15 complete-game efforts this year and 24 during her time at Utah.
Nielson leads the Pac-12 and is fifth in the country with 230 strikeouts this season, 53 of which were looking. She also leads the league with 30 starts this season and is also tied for the lead league with 32 appearances.
