A four-game homestand against nationally-ranked programs awaits the University of Utah softball team this week. The Utes will begin the week with a non-conference contest Tuesday against No. 16 Hawaii at 4 p.m. MT, before taking on No. 1 California this weekend at Ute Softball Field. Utah's Pac-12 Conference home opener will be played Thursday at 4 p.m. MT and Friday's game will start at the same time, while Saturday's contest will begin at 12 p.m. MT.
The Utes are 23-8 overall this season and 0-3 in Pac-12 play after defeating Utah State at home 7-0 last Wednesday and beating Idaho State in five innings, 10-2, Thursday in Pocatello, Idaho. Utah halted its longest losing stretch of the season, a three-game skid that included losses at then-No. 3 Washington during Utah's first weekend of Pac-12 play.
Week in Review: Utah picked up two non-conference wins last week by a combined score of 19-2 in 12 innings of play. During a 7-0 home win over Utah State on Wednesday, nine different Utes recorded hits. In Utah's 10-2 five-inning victory over Idaho State last Thursday in Pocatelllo, Idaho. Three different Utes turned in three hits apiece.
Nielson Notes: In two starts this week, Utah senior right-hander Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 11.0 innings of work. She struck out 12 and walked six, while picking up the win in both decisions. Nielson leads the Pac-12 and is second in the country with 203 strikeouts this season. She also leads the league with 27 appearances and 25 starts. Nielson is second in the conference with 139.2 innings pitched and 17 victories.
Sweet Shot: Utah junior second baseman Jackie Sweet (Corona, Calif.) went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a walk and a run scored in two games for the Utes last week. Sweet posted an .833 on-base percentage and recorded an .800 slugging percentage. Sweet also recorded three assists and had a putout in the field and also helped turn a double play for the Utah defense.
The Big Cheese: Sophomore outfielder Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) has enjoyed a great amount of success in home games this season. She has gone 4-for-7 at the plate with a team-high seven RBI in three contests.
