SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (3-0) captured its first 7-0 shutout of the season against Montana Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Junior Alejandro Medinilla posted the match clincher at the No. 3 singles position.

"I am very happy with today's performance," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We improved over last week and played a lot better doubles today."

Utah went 1-0 early on in the match after capturing two of three doubles matches and netting the doubles point. Medinilla and fellow junior Devin Lane teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot to rout Michael Facey and Zach Drost, 8-2.

Senior Dmytro Mamedov and sophomore Rafael Davidian then followed with an identical 8-2 victory at the third slot over Eric Braun and Semion Branzburg, clinching the doubles point. Sophomore Cedric Willems and junior Ben Tasevac were closing in on a third win at the No. 1 position, but their match against Andrew Warren and Ethan Vaughn was halted at 6-3.

In singles action, Willems vanquished Facey 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot, putting the Utes up 2-0. Sophomore Garrett LaBarre then downed Drost at the sixth slot, 6-2, 6-1, while Medinilla captured the match deciding point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Vaughn at the No. 3 position.

With the match decided at 4-0, the Utes posted three more consecutive wins. At the top spot, No. 85 Mamedov downed Warren, 6-3, 6-4, while Davidian topped Braun, 6-1, 7-6(3). Finally, Tasevac routed Branzburg, 6-4, 7-6(4) making the final score 7-0 for Utah.

Catch the Utes back in action Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. against Air Force at the Eccles Tennis Center.
