SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team prepares to host the Utah Intercollegiates this weekend at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, weather permitting. This weekend marks the 10th-consecutive year the Utes have hosted the tournament. Participating teams include BYU, Utah State, Weber State and Utah. Spectators are welcome and admission to the tournament is free.
Tournament Format
Play will begin each morning at 9 a.m. Thursday's schedule includes two rounds of doubles action and one round of singles. Friday and Saturday's schedule will feature one round of singles and one round of doubles. In the case of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved indoors to Eccles Tennis Center.
Last Time at the Utah Intercollegiates
The Utes dominated the tournament, capturing both the singles and doubles titles, as well as the doubles consolation title. In singles action, second-seeded senior Dmytro Mamedov netted the championship title with a narrow 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 victory over first-seeded sophomore Slim Hamza.
Hamza then returned in the doubles final round with partner junior Devin Lane to capture the championship title over Utah's Mamedov and junior Alejandro Medinilla, 8-5.
In consolation play, BYU's Travis Fillmore netted the singles title, while Utes sophomore Rafael Davidian and redshirt freshman Justin Archer captured the doubles title Friday.
