SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team(7-4) fell to No. 36 San Diego State (5-2, 2-0 MWC) by a score of 5-2 Sunday at the Rec Cen Courts. Junior Devin Lane and sophomore Cedric Willems captured Utah's two points from the Nos. 5 and 6 singles positions.
In doubles action, San Diego State swept all three matches to capture the doubles point. At the No. 2 spot, Willems and junior Ben Tasevac fell to Derek Siddiqui and Andranik Khachatryan, 8-4.
Senior Dmytro Mamedov and junior Alejandro Medinilla then dropped an 8-4 decision to Hunter Nicholas and Thorsten Bertsch, giving the Aztec the doubles point.
Lane and sophomore Garrett LaBarre were then defeated by Juan Florez and Marvin Tawasi, 8-5 at the third slot.
Mamedov returned to action in singles play at the No. 1 position, falling to Siddiqui, 7-5, 6-3, making the score 2-0 in favor of San Diego State.
At the No. 5 position, Lane then routed Florez, 6-2, 6-4, putting up Utah's first point at 2-1. Despite dropping the first set, 6-1, Medinilla rallied back to take the second set 1-6 over Bertsch at the No. 2 spot, but was ultimately unable to take the third set, 7-5, giving the Aztec's a two point advantage at 3-1.
After falling in the first set 1-6 to Khachatryan at the No. 6 slot, Willems broke back to take the second set, 7-6(6) and used the winning momentum to take the third set, 6-3, posting the Utes' second point and making the score 3-2.
San Diego State then saw the match deciding point at 4-2 at the No. 3 slot when sophomore Rafael Davidian was defeated by Nicholas, 6-3, 7-5. The score finished out at 5-2 when Tasevac was bested by Tawasi at the fourth spot, 6-0, 6-4.
