WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -Utah men's basketball redshirt freshman Jeremy Olsen was named to the Pac-12's All-Academic First Team this afternoon by league commissioner Larry Scott.
Olsen, who has a 3.79 GPA in Business, became the first Ute to win scholastic honors since the team joined the Pac-12. Three Utes, including David Foster, were named Academic All-Mountain West in 2011.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor. The Pac-12 All Academic regulations define a "starter or significant substitute" as having participated in 50 percent of a team's scheduled contests, except in unusual circumstances, such as injury.
Olsen averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds, playing in 21 contests for Utah this season. He rejoined the program after returning from a two-year LDS church mission. He arrived in Salt Lake City as a freshman prior to the 2009-10 season and redshirted.
Olsen emerged during conference play, scoring a personal-best 12 points while also grabbing six rebounds in a home contest vs. No. 9 Arizona. He also scored 12 points in a Ute victory over Colorado in the Huntsman Center. Olsen played in all but one conference game and tallied points in 15 of Utah's final 16 games.
