No. 74 Utah Advances at Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - The 74th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team netted a hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 49 Oregon Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships at Libbey Park. The sixth-seeded Utes advance to the second round where they will take on No. 18 and fourth-seeded California Thursday at 2 p.m. PT.
Sophomores Slim Hamza and Cedric Willems teamed up in doubles at the No. 2 position to capture an 8-2 victory over Alex Rovello and Daniel Sardu after senior Dmytro Mamedov and junior Ben Tasevac fell to 67th-ranked Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier at the top spot, 8-5.
Juniors Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla then topped Aaron Clissold and Daan Maasland at the No. 3 slot to clinch the doubles point for the Utes.
The match was then delayed for two hours due to rain, but not before the Ducks tied the Utes at 1-1 when Willems dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Sardu at the No. 5 singles position. But Mamedov returned to the courts valiant and downed Mullen at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-3, to put Utah back up 2-1.
Tasevac then furthered Utah's lead as he defeated Lova Randriamampandry at the sixth slot, 7-6, 7-5. Despite taking the first set, 4-6, Lane was unable to clinch his match at the No. 4 position over Rovello and fell, 6-1, 6-4 in the next two sets, making the score 3-2.
Oregon then tied the match at three apiece when Cambier upset No. 107 Hamza, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. The match came down to the wire as Medinilla battled Maasland at the No. 3 position for the victory.
Medinilla came out prepared and took the first set, 7-5, but struggled to take the second, falling 3-6. He was ultimately successful and took the third set, 7-5, to claim the 4-3 victory for Utah.
