PROVO, Utah - The Utes continued competition Friday at the Utah Fall Classic at BYU. Utah's second-seeded doubles duo of junior Cameron Lee and sophomore Justin Archer advanced through competition to the final round of doubles action.
In doubles action, Archer and Lee defeated Andrey Goryachkov and Juan Canales of BYU, 8-4, while Cowley and freshman Louis-Philippe Gascon advanced to the semifinals after beating Jacob Sullivan and Matt Pearce of BYU, 8-6. Unfortunately, Cowley was forced to withdraw from doubles competition, putting Lee and Archer into the doubles main draw finals Saturday at 12 p.m.
In singles action, sophomore Matt Cowley advanced to the semifinal round of the main draw after defeating teammate Lee,7-6(7), 6-2, but was ultimately unable to defeat BYU's second-seeded Goryachkov and suffered a hard-fought 6-4, 6(5)-7, 6-2 loss.
In consolation play, Archer continued his run by defeating Brocton Andrus, 6-3, 6-0. He then received a walk-over in the quarterfinals after Todd Fought of Weber State withdrew from play.
