TULSA, Okla. - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw two Utes advance in the pre-qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Despite a lengthy rain delay, senior Alejandro Medinilla and junior Cedric Willems netted victories in the first round to advance.
In his third appearance at the All-American Championships, Medinilla managed a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Jarryd Woog of Memphis and faces Oaklahoma's Austin Siegel Sunday in the second round.
Willems downed Oklahoma State's Nathan Roper, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the second round, where he will take on David O'Hare of Memphis.
Junior Ben Tasevac was unable to come up with a third victory for the Utes and fell to 11th-seeded Farris Gosea of Illinois, 6-3, 6-2.
Medinilla and Willems return to action Sunday at the ITA All-American Championships for the second and third rounds.
