Utah Honoring 90's Championship Teams
Utah Athletics will honor the basketball championship teams of the 1990's at halftime of today's contest.
The Utes won seven Western Athletic Conference regular-season championships and three tournament titles during the decade thanks to the play of legends like Keith Van Horn and Andre Miller.
Under head coach Rick Majerus, Utah also advanced to the postseason eight times, making seven trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Utes reached the Sweet 16 four times, the Elite Eight twice and were the National Runner-Up in 1998.
The Utes are 15th all-time in NCAA history with 1,698 wins and rank 19th all-time with 27 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Utah's 32 regular-season conference championships put it fifth among all Division I schools trailing Kansas, Kentucky, Penn and North Carolina.
History vs. UCLA
The Utes trail the all-time series with UCLA, 6-4 as these two teams both rank among the top-20 all-time for wins (UCLA - 8th, 1,769 and Utah - 16th, 1,696)
Utah has lost both games against the Bruins since joining the Pac-12. In fact, it has not topped UCLA since 1983 and has only one win against them in Salt Lake City, back in 1928.
The victory in 1983 occurred on a neutral court as the No. 10-seeded Utes coached by Jerry Pimm upset the No. 2-seeded, Pac-10 champion Bruins in Boise, 67-61 to reach the Sweet 16. Pace Mannion led three Ute players in double figures with 18 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Last Time Out
Delon Wright scored 22 points, collected six rebounds, six steals and five assists to lift Utah to an 84-66 victory over USC on Thursday night.
Dakarai Tucker added a career-high 18 points and made four 3-pointers while Jordan Loveridge chipped in 16 to help the Utes snap a two-game losing streak.
USC lost despite shooting 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field. Utah matched the Trojans by shooting 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field. The Utes gained an advantage by also forcing 16 turnovers - including eight steals - and had a 27-14 edge in points off turnovers.
The Utes used three different runs to their advantage against the Trojans. Eight points from Tucker fueled a 12-1 run to gain the lead near the end of the first half and a 14-4 charge keyed by Tucker and Wright gave Utah a double-digit lead in the second half.
Finally, a 17-2 burst ignited by two Wright steal-and-scores and culminating in a Bachynski dunk made the margin 77-57 with 4:51 remaining.
