The Utah baseball team traveled to UNLV for a fall scrimmage this past weekend. No score was kept, but head coach Bill Kinneberg was pleased with what he saw out of the Utes.
"We played 14 innings, and we kept very few statistics and just played the game each inning," Kinneberg said. "We saw some good things. I liked our at bats and pitching, for the most part, but we had some breakdowns in some areas. We divided up the innings by two groups of players, so that each guy got 3-4 at bats and the pitchers each got 1-2 innings.
"It was good for our team to play someone else, and it was good for our 15 freshmen to experience travel. It was a completely new experience for them. In that way, I think we will be a little more prepared once we start the season, because we have one under our belt. That was really the crux of the trip - to get those players some experience.
The Utes have two weeks of team practice remaining before moving into individual workouts until team practices begin again in January.
"We have two weeks left to try to correct some of our weaknesses, and continue to get better in the things that we are doing well in. The biggest thing for us will be to continue to practice as many game situations as we can. Once we go back to individuals, the team concept is lost a little bit. In addition, we'll be indoors most of January and February. The next time we will be able to scrimmage might be in St. George in February."
Utah has several scrimmages remaining at Ute Field through October.
