SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team managed to come back from a 2-1 deficit en route to a 3-2 upset victory (25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-13) over the No. 2-ranked Washington Huskies Saturday evening at the Huntsman Center.
The Utes, who moved to 16-11 overall and 6-10 in Pac-12 play, has now won four consecutive matches with three of those wins coming over top 25 ranked teams. The Huskies, who lost earlier in the week to Colorado, dropped to 25-2 overall and 14-2 in the league play. It also marks the first time that UW has dropped consecutive matches since Oct. 26 (USC) and Oct 28, 2012 (UCLA).
Utah picked up a win against a top 10 ranked team for the first time since downing No. 7 Colorado State back on Oct. 15, 2004 and it marks the first win over a top five ranked team since the program's upset over No. 1 Stanford back on Sept. 5, 2000.
Senior
Chelsey Schofield-Olsen registered seven kills, while helping guide the Utes to a 25-19 win over the Huskies in set one. Seniors
Bailey Bateman and
Shelby Dalton added four kills each and Utah managed to hit .432 against a squad that came into the match ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 and 45th in the nation giving up just .169 to opposing teams.
The Utes opened the set with a 4-1 run and later pushed its lead to 9-3 on a kill from Schofield-Olsen and the home squad never looked back. Utah would lead by as many as seven points on several different occasions After taking an 18-11 lead on a kill from junior
Kendall Cygan, both teams would trade points throughout the remainder of the match, but Bateman managed to connect on a pair of kills late in the set give Utah the six-point win.
Utah led the majority of the first half of the second set until a 4-0 run from the Huskies helped give UW a 14-13 lead midway through the set. Utah countered with a 3-0 run to take a two-point lead, but the two teams would then trade points until the Huskies went on a 4-1 run late in the set to go up set-point. Utah called a timeout down 24-23, but UW's Crissy Jones connected on a kill that gave the Huskies the set, 25-23, and tie the match 1-1 heading into intermission.
In a much closer start to the third set, the Huskies would eventually take a 13-10 lead following a 4-0 run and that led to Utah calling a timeout. The Utes then responded with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 15-15 and later took an 18-17 lead on back-to-back kills from senior
Makenzie Moea'i, but UW closed out the set on an 8-2 run en route to a 25-20 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was a battle of runs between both teams as UW opened the set with a 4-1 run and would later push its lead to 11-6 on the heels of a 7-1 run. Utah countered with a 5-2 run to pull within two points of the Huskies, but UW's 3-0 helped give UW a five-point lead, up 16-11. The Utes again countered, this time with a 5-1 run and trailed 17-16 before the Huskies won back-to-back points to go up 19-16 and force the home team to call a timeout.
Out of the timeout, Utah won the next three points to tie the match at 19-19 and that forced the Huskies to call its final timeout of the fourth set. UW would win the first two points out of the timeout before the Utes came back with a 3-0 run and lead 22-21. A 3-1 run from the Huskies though, would give the visiting squad the lead 24-23 and up match point. Utah came back to tie it 24-24 and then after going down match point again, consecutive kills from Moea'i, senior
Kalee Kirby and freshman
Adora Anae would give the Utes a 27-25 win and send the match into a fifth and decisive set.
UW's Krista Vansant opened the fifth set with a kill and UW proceeded to open the final set with a 6-2 run, but Utah came back winning four of the next five points to pull within one and force the visiting squad to call a timeout. Schofield-Olsen recorded a service ace out of the break, but UW countered with three straight points to go up 10-7 and force the Utes to call its final timeout.
Bateman and Schofield-Olsen tallied kills for Utah and then a UW attack error tied the match at 10-10, but UW came back to win two of the next three points to take a 12-11 lead. Just when the Huskies looked like they would put away the match, Utah countered with a 4-1 run to close out the set, 15-13, and win the match over the Huskies, 3-2.
Tonight's win snaps a 10-match losing streak to Washington as Utah picked up a victory over the Huskies for the first time since a 3-0 win back on Sept. 13, 1985, in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Utes had five players with 10 kills or more and were led by Schofield-Olsen's team-high 18 kills on the evening. Anae added 10 kills and had 10 digs to record her the first double-double of her career, while senior
Lea Adolph finished the match tying a career-high with 24 digs.
Kirby collected a career-high 38 assists and she too recorded a double-double with 16 digs on the evening. Moea'i, who is playing for the injured freshman
Eliza Katoa, racked up one of the best performances of the season with 11 kills on a team-high .444 hitting.
Washington managed to out-block the Utes 13.5 to 7.0 on the night, but Utah managed to down the Huskies offensively - outhitting them .259 to .190. It marks just the third time all season that UW has allowed an opponent to hit above .255, with the Utes doing it for the second time.
The Utes return to action next Friday, Nov. 21, against No. 1 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., and will then head over to Berkeley to face Cal on Sunday, Nov. 23.
