SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team will begin its fall team practice on Sunday, Sept. 21.
The Utes lost 10 key players from last year's team, including MLB draftees Mitch Watrous, Nick Green and Tanner Banks. The 2014 fall roster has 17 new players, along with key returners Kody Davis, Wyler Smith, Dallas Carroll and Dalton Carroll.
Also joining the team is associate head coach and hitting coach Jason Hawkins, who spent three years as head assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara.
"I think we're all looking forward to having team practice," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The individual sessions have gone well, but there is nothing like getting our team together. We've got so many new guys that these 27 practices are going to be really important for us. We're looking forward to getting started. We want to get the new guys oriented and Jason brings a new offensive philosophy. By the end of fall, our goal is to be game ready. On Oct. 31 we will have a good gage of where we are.
The Utes will hold 15 intrasquad scrimmages during the fall campaign, with contests on Sept. 25-26 held at Smith's Ballpark. Other scrimmages will be held at Ute Field. Utah will also travel to UNLV for a scrimmage on Oct. 18 at 11:00 a.m.
