With a little over a week of practice under their belts, Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg is pleased with the early progression of the team.
"It's going fast and furious at this point," Kinneberg said. "We're trying to do a whole lot of things, but it has gone very well. The guys have worked extremely hard, and slowly they are grasping concepts, ideas and skills, so that has been good. We've scrimmaged a few times, so they are seeing some live pitching, and the scrimmages have gone fairly well to this point. But there is still a lot of work to be done."
Kinneberg is most pleased with the work ethic that he has seen in his players so far during the fall campaign.
"This group has done a tremendous job of coming to the park, working and focusing on trying to get everything that we are throwing at them," Kinneberg said. "We have 15 freshmen on the field, and things are fast and furious for them. They have got to get settled in and understand the speed of the game and all the situational things that are being thrown at them, along with all the mechanical and skill work that we have been doing. They are beginning to understand and grasp that, and their ability to relax and let the game come to them is starting to happen. That's the biggest thing that needs to happen, getting guys up to speed in the game."
Other positives include players returning from injury and players who have stepped up in leadership roles.
"It's been nice to have Dallas Carroll back on the field. The pitching staff really took care of themselves over the summer and came back healthy and stronger, so that's been a positive. Some of our returning players have really taken over some of the leadership roles, including AJ Young, Max Schuman, Cody Scaggari, Kody Davis, Wyler Smith, Dalton and Dallas Carroll, Bret Helton. That's been a real positive as well."
The Utes have 11 intrasquad scrimmages remaining during the fall campaign at Ute Field. Utah will also travel to UNLV for a scrimmage on Oct. 18 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
