SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah softball team will begin it preparation for the upcoming 2015 season when the Utes conduct its first spring practice Monday afternoon.
"We are more ready to begin a season than any year that I have been here," said head coach Amy Hogue. "We had a great fall and the girls put in the effort needed every day to be ready for the upcoming season."
The Utes are coming off a 31-24 season overall and finished sixth in the Pac-12 with a record of 8-15. The Utes closed out the 2015 regular-season winning eight-consecutive games and will head into the 2015 campaign returning six seniors and having lost just two starters from last season's squad.
Hogue, who is now in her eighth season, is 188-191-1 overall while at the helm of the Ute softball program. The 31 victories last season were the most under her direction and the eight conference victories are the most since joining the Pac-12 as well.
The Utes will play one of its toughest schedules in school history as well, and by far, it toughest since joining the Pac-12. The Utes will play in four different tournaments (So-Cal Collegiate Classic, UNLV/DeMarini Classic, Mary Nutter Classic, Hawai'i Spring Fling) before opening Pac-12 play at UCLA (March 13-15) and the squad will not have a home game until March 21-23 when they host Oregon in conference play.
"We gave up a lot of home games to have a tougher schedule," said Hogue. "We felt like we had enough wins last season to get us into the tournament, but our RPI wasn't good enough, so we needed to make some changes this year to get our RPI up."
Utah opens the 2015 season at the So-Cal Collegiate Classic (Feb. 6-8) where the team will face the likes of Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Long Beach State. Out of 28 different opponents in 2015, 11 of the teams were NCAA Tournament participants last season.
