On reviewing the Arizona game:
I think it's been eye-opening. It's not time to jump ship and recreate the wheel. It was a good old-fashioned beat down. We were pretty competitive the whole first half and did some good stuff. The level of physicality, from top to bottom, was what affected us. They threw the first punch and we reacted. T.J. McConnell and Brandon Ashley played great. We made adjustments and T.J. just played great offensively. It wasn't a failure on our end, they made tough shots. They pounded us on the glass and it took the wind out of our sails. It had an impact offensively also. In the second half, it was the Stanley Johnson show. They hit us with a lot of body punches and out-worked us. We are not going to get bigger or stronger. Toughness is a mindset. That was a difficult environment on Saturday. You have to be a realist about things and not be too drastic.
On what needs to be changed defensively:
It's not a defensive thing, it came down to rebounding. Our guys did get beat off the dribble and put our bigs in bad spots. On a few occasions we would box out well and they'd make the shot. Other times, we wouldn't box out and they'd get the rebound, giving them one or two more offensive chances.
On paying physical teams:
I'm never going to be happy but we are much improved from where we were last year. Chris really helps at the 4-spot. We were not completely set in our matchups on Saturday. Delon was on Stanley and then he was also on Rondae Hollis-Jefferson a little, who plays the 3 for them. It got physical. There were some plays that went to another level. We got overwhelmed. If we need to create that setting in our practice by holding the whistle and letting the physicality elevate, then so be it. We have to get low, be ready to play defense and remain active. We can't be reactive like we were on Saturday. They've got some specimens. Stanley and Kaleb Tarczewski are not common for their position, same with Rondae. Now we're on to Washington State. They're a little different with their offensive approach. We need to be ready for their attack.
On DaVonte Lacy:
He's as solid a kid as I've come around. He's really mature and we spent a lot of time off the court together in China. He stands for a lot of things we talk about her in our program. He's very outgoing and ws a team favorite. He represents his school and our conference extremely well. He took a leadership role with the club and doesn't have an ounce of selfishness. He has a lot of pride and is having a great season. He is one of the top scorers in the league and is a handful to play against.
On rebounding:
It's the hardest thing to coach. We seek players out in the recruiting period who just go get a rebound. It is a skill to be able to rebound outside of your area. Some "hit and git", they look for contact and then release to get the ball. A lot of times Saturday we were rotating in a pick-and-roll situation and that really threw off our box outs. It's desire. I didn't expect our guys to box out Rondae all the time but you can't let him get the ball. Sometimes it was on a missed block out. They had four offensive rebounds off missed free throws. Again, it's just desire. Hit the guy and get it. It's going to be a long night if we can't rebound off the line. We're going to run some drills here in practice today. I saw our guards were standing around and watching also. We want our guards to come sandwich the guy on the line sometimes like John Stockton did. He was one of the best at doing that on free-throws.
On Washington State:
They have two road wins already, one at Cal and then another against their arch-rival Washington. Coach Kent is doing a great job and implementing his scheme. They hit triple digits against Oregon. He likes to implement a high-powered attack and wants to run. He has his younger players buying in. I think they're surprising some teams so far, along with Oregon State, with the way they've performed this year.
On returning home:
With no school today due to the holiday, we already watched film. It's good to get back to this environment. We have a Whiteout scheduled for Wednesday. We always have ghosts floating around this arena but it doesn't guarantee a win. WSU has wins over Cal and Washington, like I said. Sports is a great thing. We get to jump back in the saddle. Our guys are eager to get the bad taste out of their mouth.
On how he thought Delon Wright played:
We have some clips where teams are loading up on him. On Saturday, Rondae was physical with him. Arizona guarded the rim because they know he likes to get there. Delon passed to Jordan and Dakarai and they missed shots. Plan A was to go take shots at the rim and attack. He might have gone to Plan B too quickly. We got out of sorts and he pressed himself. We all have to be willing to make multiple passes and not get thrown out of sync. Coaches need to put players in position to win. He puts a lot of onus on himself.
