INFIELD Not every team has the luxury of bringing back an entire infield, let alone, an infield that started over 96 percent of Utah's 55 games played last season.
Heading into the 2015 campaign, head coach
Amy Hogue has just that luxury, as she brings back All-American
Hannah Flippen (Bonita, Calif.), All-Region honoree
Anissa Urtez (Long Beach, Calif.), All-Pac-12 selection
Bridget Castro (Bellflower, Calif.) and Pac-12 All-Academic selection
Kristen Stewart (Covina, Calif.).
Offensively, all four players accounted for nearly 50 percent of Utah's 316 runs batted in last season, while defensively they helped set a new school record with 46 double plays turned. The Utes averaged 0.84 double plays-per-game in 2014, which ranked first in both the Pac-12 and the nation.
Flippen became Utah's first NFCA All-American selection since 2006 after posting a .382 batting average with nine doubles, six triples and three home runs her freshman season. She drove in 33 runs last season and scored 54 runs as well, while garnering both Pac-12 All-Conference and All-Pacific Region First Team honors. In the field, Flippen led the team with 163 assists and helped account for 27 double plays.
Urtez, who earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team, returns for her sophomore campaign following a 2014 season where she hit .353 with 12 doubles, six home runs and a team-leading 55 RBI. Primarily playing the shortstop position, she recorded 149 assists and she, too, was in on 27 of Utah's 46 double plays.
Castro, who mans the first base position for the Utes, hit .342 with eight doubles and was tied for the team-high with seven home runs. She drove in 88 runs and scored 30 runs as well, while leading the team with 434 putouts.
Stewart, the only non-sophomore in the infield, returns for her junior season after hitting .292 with a double, two triples and three dingers in 2014. Stewart walked 22 times, was hit-by-pitch a school-record-tying 10 times last season and ranked third on the squad with a .448 on-base percentage. She tallied 92 fielding assists and committed just seven errors.
The Utes, who are coming off a 31-24 campaign in 2014, open the 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 6 against No. 24-ranked Texas A&M in the SoCal Collegiate Classic in Westwood, Calif. Utah will face No. 22-ranked Notre Dame, Long Beach State and Idaho State in the tournament that weekend, as well.
