SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Utah softball team was selected to finish the 2015 conference campaign in sixth-place as voted on by the Pac-12 head coaches, the league office Thursday morning.
Utah, who earned a total of 26 votes in the poll, is coming off a 31-24 season in 2014 and finished in sixth place in league play with a record of 8-15. It marked the first 30-win season for the Utes under head coach Amy Hogue and it was Utah's highest win total since earning 40 victories back in 2006.
Reigning Pac-12 Champion and Women's College World Series participant Oregon was picked to win the Pac-12 by the narrowest of margins after receiving five of the nine first-place votes for a total of 61 votes. UCLA was selected second in the poll after receiving the remaining four first-place votes for a total of 60 votes in the poll.
Arizona and Washington totaled 46 votes each and earned a tie for third place in the preseason poll, while Arizona Sate tallied 37 points and was picked just ahead of Utah to finish fifth in the league. Rounding out the poll behind Utah were California (21), Oregon State (15) and Stanford (12), respectively.
Hogue, who is entering her eighth season at the helm of the Ute softball program, welcomes back a core of 13 veterans from last season's squad, which includes All-American Hannah Flippen and a pair of All-Region honorees in Anissa Urtez and Mariah Ramirez. Overall, the team is comprised of six seniors, along with three juniors, five sophomores and four incoming freshmen.
Utah opens the season next Friday, Feb. 6 against No. 24/24 Texas A&M in the SoCal Claissic in Westwood, Calif. The Utes will play 29-consecutive road games before hosting Oregon in its home-opener on Mar. 21. The three-game Pac-12 series against the Ducks will run Mar. 21-23.
