On being ranked No. 9 in the latest AP Poll:
It feels good and we don't talk about it. We had a little breakdown and debrief of what we need to do moving forward. Winning is fun, it's not as grinding as past years. Dirk's {Facer) been here from day one. We fix what's broken and try and repeat what you're doing well. You're only as good as the next game. Behind the scenes here we don't really care about it too much. Another time of year, near the end, that number would mean more but it's an indication of moving forward.
On getting the first three Pac-12 games at home:
A lot of the time you don't realize that advantage. In China this past summer, I had a lot of the other players talk about the crowd and altitude when they come to Utah. Here and Colorado are the only places you play above sea level. This trip also demands that you're on a plane other than maybe the UW-WSU trip. That makes a difference. I think our up-tempo style of offense helps grind teams down. We won't have that type of advantage against Colorado.
On what he expects from Colorado and the similarities he sees in the two programs:
Coach Boyle stresses defense and rebounding. Would I love to have the leading scorer in the conference? Sure, that'd be nice, but the culture of the team is everyone plays defense and gets held accountable for their mistakes. Offensively, we don't take bad shots. We may even pass up good shots. That's the way I wanted to play this season. We have an unselfish team and everyone is contributing and having fun. Delon is our leading scorer and doesn't care about stats. Not many guys want to come out if they can get some more points at the end of the game but he knows that other guys need to get some time. He is completely unselfish. With our team, we want it to be hard to determine which guy to stop, like Colorado a few years ago when they won the league. One game to the next, not knowing who the top scorer is going to be, that can be a weapon offensively. If you can't find the head of the snake how do you kill it?
On the possibility of Josh Scott suiting up:
We have no choice but to prepare like he's playing. He's one of the best big men in the conference. This is a guard-dominant league. These three teams, UCLA, USC and Colorado, along with our team, we all have guards leading our team in scoring. They won't let the cat out of the bag and he's a really good player so we'll prepare for him.
On being worried they haven’t experienced a close game in a while:
Everyone is getting ample playing time. In practice we put our team in different positions to create teaching opportunities. Whether it be from an out-of-bounds or an end-of-game situation, we work on everything in practice. If we are taking care of things in practice you might not need any end-of-game plays. You hope to be well ahead at the end of the game.
On the environments this past weekend:
It's fun to be a part of. I don’t want to sound corny but at Montana, we had a great home court. That’s what I miss the most and have the fondest memories of, game day and my teammates. Knowing those people were going to be behind you. Then you walk out Friday night here and the place is packed without the students back in school. I’m happy for our kids to get to experience something like that. The impact they have, the crowd, other teams notice it. The passion of our fans is very intense. They come up and talk to us and tell us about how they think we’re doing. Right now, it's an exciting time.
On playing three conference games in six days:
I don't know when you can take time off but then you look at the flip side to the coin and the teams we play were all on the road. There’s certainly no disadvantage to us in that regard. With TV, it’s what they want. You have to do certain things. We signed up to be on national tv as much as we could. In the past, this Colorado game would be on a weekend. ESPN comes in and wants it to be Wednesday and I'm not going to say no. We get a week off before the Arizona trip.
On free-throw shooting:
At the Sunday shoot-around, I said forget the free-throws. It was one of those deals where they don't want to shoot prior to the game and then we went out and made a high percentage. Our misses were not bad misses at the line Friday. If they would have been worse, they actually might have gone in. Ricochets off the middle of the rim are good shots and they probably don't get that bounce. I'm worried about Jakob so he will keep working. We have probably shot as many free-throws this year as we have with any team I've been a part of.
