SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Utah men's basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Pac-12 Conference in 2015-16, the league announced Thursday morning in conjunction with its annual media days in San Francisco.
The Utes tallied seven of a possible 36 first-place votes for a total of 360 points. Last season's regular-season champions, Arizona, was picked to finish first for a fourth-straight year after receiving 18 first-place votes for a total of 406 points. California tallied nine first-place votes and was picked just ahead of the Utes in second-place with 378 total points.
Oregon (338) and UCLA (304) notched one first-place vote and rounded out the top-five picks, respectively.
Oregon State (235) and Colorado (188) were picked sixth and seventh, with Arizona State (165), Stanford (145), USC (111), Washington (96) and Washington State (65) rounding out the remaining teams in the poll.
Utah returns four starters from last season's squad that went 26-9 overall and 13-5 in league play, including seniors Brandon Taylor (10.6 ppg/3.3 apg) and Jordan Loveridge (10.0 ppg/3.9 rpg) along with one of the Pac-12's best big men, Jakob Poeltl (9.1 ppg/6.8 rpg).
The 2015-16 season gets underway for the Pac-12 with 11 games on Friday, Nov. 13. The Utes will take on Southern Utah in the season-opener and the contest will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks as part of the year's Full Court Friday.
