SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team dropped a Pac-12 Conference match to No. 6 Stanford, falling in three sets to the Cardinal (20-25, 16-25, 21-25) Friday evening at the Huntsman Center.
The loss drops Utah to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in league play, while the Cardinal improved to 11-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Pac-12.
Stanford took a 1-0 lead after winning the first set, 25-20. Utah opened the set winning four of the first six points, but the Cardinal came right back with a 6-0 run and later used a 6-3 run to take a 19-16 lead, which sparked Utah call a timeout. The Utes came out of the break and won the next point, but Stanford closed the frame with a 6-3 run to take the set by five points.
After trading points with the Cardinal to open the second set, Stanford countered with a 9-1 run to take a 15-8 lead. Sophomore Carly Trueman got the Utes back on the board with a kill, but Stanford won five of the next six points to take a 20-10 lead late in the set. Utah went on a 4-1 run to pull within seven points, but Stanford closed out the set winning four of the final six points to take the frame 25-16 and go up 2-0 as both teams headed to the intermission break.
Stanford opened the third set with a 6-2 lead, but the Utes came storming back and following a 5-0 run the home squad took a 10-9 lead and forced the Cardinal to call a timeout. Stanford won the next three points and then both squads just traded points until an ace from senior Kendall Cygan notched the set up 18-18. Stanford won five of the next seven points, which forced Utah to call a timeout, and despite taking the next point the Utes fell 25-21.
Stanford tallied a .269 hitting percentage and was led by freshman Hayley Hodson's 10 kills. Meanwhile, the Utes hit just .183, but freshman Adora Anae led all players with her 11 kills on the evening.
Anae added 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season, while redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen totaled a team-high 29 assists - matching Stanford's Madi Bugg, who also tallied 29 assists on the evening.
Stanford out-blocked the Utes 11.0 to 8.0 in total team blocks, but freshman Berkeley Oblad led the match with six total blocks for the home squad.
Utah will have a day off before returning back to Pac-12 play, hosting California on Sunday at noon in the Huntsman Center.
