SALT LAKE CITY - Utah sophomore Adora Anae set a new career-high with 26 kills and matched a career-high with 25 digs, but it was not enough as the Utah Utes (7-12, 1-7) were downed in five sets (25-22, 13-25, 25-12, 19-25, 11-15) to the California Golden Bears (7-12, 1-7) Sunday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.
Anae broke her own school record for most kills in match during the rally-scoring era, collecting one more kill then the 26-kill effort that she recorded earlier this season against Lipscomb back on Aug. 29. Anae also posted 20-plus kills and 20-plus digs in the same match for a second time this season, becoming the first Ute player ever to accomplish such a feat in the same season.
Sophomore Carly Trueman added 11 kills and freshman Berkeley Oblad posted 10 kills for the Utes, while the Golden Bears had five different players total at least 10 kills in the match. Lara Vukasovic led the visiting squad with 17 kills on the day.
Redshirt Jessie Jorgensen posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 digs and a career-high 54 assists. Caroline Sipiora tied a career-high with 11 digs and Tess Sutton added 19 digs as both teams finished the match with 81 team digs each.
Utah took the first set, 25-22, behind Anae's six kills and .417 hitting percentage, but Cal came back and tied the match 1-1 with a 25-13 win in the second set. The Golden Bears hit .343 in the second set, while limiting the Utes to hit at a clip of just .000.
Utah rebounded from the lopsided second set and returned the favor with a 25-12 win in the third set, but the Golden Bears managed to send the match into a fifth and decisive set after taking the fourth frame, 25-19.
Cal opened the final set winning five of the first eight points before a kill from Anae made it 5-4. Both teams traded a point before a kill from Carmen Annevelink and a service ace from Alyssa Jensen gave the Golden Bears an 8-5 leads as the two teams traded sides of the court.
Utah took the next point with a kill from Madison Legerski, but Cal countered with a 4-1 run to take a commanding 12-7 lead. Utah won the next two points, forcing Cal to take a timeout, and then won the next point with a kill from Anae to pull the Utes within two, down 12-10. Cal won the next point and despite Utah getting another point out of a timeout, the Golden Bears closed the set with a kill from Lillian Schonewise and a Utah attack error to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
The Golden Bears snapped a two-match skid to the Utes with the victory, while also improving to 8-6 all-time against Utah.
The Utes will return to action with a pair of matches in the desert next weekend. Utah will face Arizona State next Friday, Oct. 23 before closing out the weekend at Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 25.
