WBSC Premier12 Pro Schedule and Results
SALT LAKE CITY - Former Utah baseball player Trey Nielsen has been named to the Team Italia Premier12 team roster.
The team will compete in the WBSC Premier12 Tournament in Taipei, Taiwan (with semifinals and finals to be held in Tokyo, Japan), Nov. 9 to 21. The Utes have two former players competing in the tournament, with Parker Morin on the USA roster.
Nielsen was a 30th-round draft pick to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013. He pitched for the High-A Palm Beach Cardinals last year with a 9-6 record and a 2.59 ERA with 78 strikeouts over 111 innings.
In his Utah career, Nielsen hit .259 with 47 doubles, 14 home runs, 85 RBI and a .422 slugging percentage. He was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2011, in addition to being named second-team all-conference at third base that season. Drafted as a pitcher, he made just four appearances on the mound due to injury, and had seven strikeouts over six innings.
