SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team closed out its fall team practice last week with a fall World Series.
Assistant coach Mike Crawford's team defeated associate head coach Jason Hawkins' team over the three games of the series, winning game one 2-0 and game three 13-4. Game two ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
Head coach Bill Kinneberg was pleased with the competitiveness of the team practices.
"I think the best part is that there is quite a bit of competition still going on," Kinneberg said. "There are still some positions that are up for grabs, which is always good. Some new guys have come in and had good fall campaigns and pushed our returning guys. We have to make sure that we are developing roles so that by the time the season starts we are putting our guys in a position to succeed, and that is something we will work hard at over the next few months.
The Utes will continue individual work through the winter with spring practice beginning in January.
"The guys will still be working but the goals are a little bit different now," Kinneberg said. "We'll work on conditioning, speed development and strength training as we get ready for January." Key returners for the Utes include three-year starters Kody Davis (2B), Dallas Carroll (3B), Dalton Carroll (RHP), Cody Scaggari (SS), Wyler Smith (OF) and AJ Young (C). Sophomore pitcher Jayson Rose, who led the Utes in ERA and strikeouts, was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection last year.
Utah begins its 2016 season against Minnesota on Feb. 19.
