Complete 2016 Utah Softball Schedule
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah softball has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2016 season. The Utes will play 53 games, 28 of which will be against teams that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament.
Utah will take part in four tournaments and host 17 contests, including four Pac-12 series, at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
"I can honestly say I have never been more excited for our spring season than this year," head coach Amy Hogue said. "From our very first game vs. Notre Dame until our last contest against Oregon, it is simply and exciting schedule."
The Utes will begin the 2016 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. They will face No. 25 Notre Dame in the opener before playing Georgia State, Portland State, Mountain West Conference champion Fresno State, Boston College and close with No. 17 Kentucky.
The finale against the Wildcats will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks and marks the first of 17 games on the conference's television platform. Five of Utah's eight Pac-12 series will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks as well as the annual clash with BYU, which serves as the home opener for the Utes.
"We start our extensive list of live Pac-12 Network televised games the very first weekend with Kentucky," Hogue added. "The days of easing into things are long gone. We will hit the ground running against some of the top teams in the country the first few days of the season."
Utah also heads to Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 19-21 to participate in the DeMarini Desert Classic where it will play Robert Morris, San Jose State, UC Davis, Boise State and Hawaii.
The Utes will have a few days off before heading to Cathedral City, Calif., to participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, which runs Feb. 25-28. The Utes take on defending national champion Florida, No. 9 Oklahoma, Big West champion Cal State Northridge, Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
Following a brief doubleheader at USF in Tampa, Utah brings its tournament schedule to a close in Orlando at the UCF Spring Fling, Mar. 11-13. The event, hosted by the 16th-ranked Knights will also feature Indiana State, Florida Gulf Coast and Purdue.
The Utes will play in-state foes to open their home schedule with the West Coast Conference champion Cougars on Mar. 15 and a doubleheader against Southern Utah the following day. Utah also hosts Big Sky champion Weber State and Idaho State in single weekday games, Mar. 29 and 30.
Pac-12 play begins with a visit from Oregon State, Mar. 19-21. The other home series on the schedule include No. 20 Arizona State, Apr. 15-17, Stanford, Apr. 22-24, and No. 5 UCLA, May 6-8.
The four road trips for Utah in league play will occur Mar. 24-26 at No. 13 Arizona, Apr. 8-10 at No. 23 California, Apr. 29 - May 1 at No. 21 Washington and May 12-14 at No. 7 Oregon. The Utes are the only team to play four NFCA Top 25-ranked squads on the road in conference play.
The NCAA Regionals will be held May 19-22 with the Super Regionals following them, May 26-30, and the last eight teams standing will advance to the College World Series, Jun. 1-7 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium at OGE Energy Field in Oklahoma City
The Utes return 11 letterwinners from last season's squad including National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Pacific Region honorees Hannah Flippen, Katie Donovan and Kristen Stewart. Utah went 36-19 during the 2015 season and reached the NCAA Tournament after finishing fourth in the Pac-12.
"Our team will be ready for the challenge, I can promise you that," Hogue declared. "The talent we have returning should give us as chance at improving on our top-25 ranking from last season."
